Lily Briscoe
This painting is named after a character in To the Lighthouse, by Virginia Woolf. Lily Briscoe is a painter and Woolfe writes about her in such an accurate and intimate way that one could believe Woolfe was a painter, herself. In keeping with one of my beliefs, that painters and writers are the most suitable artistic pairing, I offer this painting to Lily. She encountered her canvases the way I do - courageous yet intimidated, in pursuit of a lover whose affection is yet to be won, and moved by a conquest which will never dissuade me.
Part of the Consolation Flowers series
Oil on board, 20 × 16”
